Shovel Knight Creators Announce Sequel: ‘Gun Knight’

“When you’re going about creating a sequel to a game, you need to think about raising the stakes,” says Sean Velasco of Yacht Club Games. “We’ve added quite a bit to Shovel Knight through expansion packs, so we really needed to redefine the game if we want to brand any kind of release as a successor to the original. I think we’ve definitely done that with Gun Knight.

Gun Knight, which is slated to release alongside 2019 expansion packs Shovel Knight: King of Cards and Shovel Knight: Showdown, is a 2D side-scrolling platformer featuring Gun Knight, a Barrett 50 caliber wielding fighter who exists in the same game universe as fan favorites such as Spectre Knight and the series’ original protagonist, Shovel Knight.

“There’s a lot of things we’re keeping the same, and a couple things we’re doing differently. Gun Knight is going to have the same clever platforming and replayability that you came to love from the original Shovel Knight, while also playing as military-operative-gone-rogue Gun Knight, who will stop at nothing to find the man who killed the love of his life, Paulina. We think the balance between continuing the artistic momentum of the original game while also forcing players to grapple with the greyness of society’s moral structures, while delving into Gun Knight’s past as a mercenary is going to result in a game we can continue adding to for another half-decade.”

Gun Knight will be releasing in early June, and has been described so far as “innovative,” “a new take on a fan favorite,” and “containing far too much explicit violence to even be considered for a Nintendo console release.”
