Man Holding Onto 120 GB SSD From 2014 Because It Was 500 Fucking Dollars

“Yeah, that’s my Red Dead Redemption 2 drive,” David Gorely tells us, bordering on defensive. “That’s the drive where I have Red Dead Redemption 2, and like half a season of House. I spent 500 dollars on it. Anyway, moving on…”

David continues giving us a tour of his almost-completely-impressive system, showcasing his custom, hard-line water-cooling of his 2080 Ti. Displayed somewhat prominently are three large 2 TB hard drives, and two SSDs, mounted properly in their drive bays. We can’t seem to forget the third SSD, sticker peeling with age, that’s been zip-tied to the back panel, however. The ugly duckling, but instead of a tale of not judging a book by its cover, it’s a cautionary tale in the disposable nature of technology, probably with a moral surrounding VR.

“Yeah, I know, I could get a 1 TB hard drive to replace that thing for like 120 dollars on a good sale. I know that. And yeah, I know I’m kind of running out of space,” Gorely explains, unprompted. “And I mean, fuck, the read/write is in the shitter because that thing is really reaching end-of-life. But, hey, I really like dedicating one game to it, you know? And I’m going to finish House soon, too.”

Almost as an afterthought, he tells us, “It’s funny, I actually paid more for that thing than, like, the other SSDs in here combined.” As he says this, he violently tears the eraser head off of the pencil he’s holding.

After some more speaking, we conclude the interview, telling Mr. Gorely that his computer is indeed very impressive. As we leave, he chuckles, and tells us, “You know guys, I think you’ve convinced me. I’m going to toss that thing and replace it with something a bit more modern. No need to hold onto old ghosts, no matter what the sticker price was, you know? 500 dollars.”

The SSD now sits in a drawer to this day, joined by 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, a few non-functioning laptop drives, several mini USB cables, the A/V hookups for a Wii, and an i7-9700K.
